In some specialized environments, such as military or government offices, you might need to make and receive urgent or critical calls. These critical calls might require higher priority handling, such as being able to bypass other calls. If you have the need for this specialized call handling, your system administrator can add Multi-level Precedence and Preemption (MLPP) to your phone.
Keep these terms in mind:
* Precedence indicates the priority level associated with a call.
* Preemption is the process of ending an existing, lower priority call while accepting a higher priority call that is sent to your phone.
The levels of precedence a call can have are:
* Normal priority (routine) -- no special icon displays.
* Low priority (priority) -- indicated by one box.
* Medium priority (immediate) -- indicated by two boxes.
* High priority (flash) -- indicated by three boxes.
* Highest priority (flash override) or Executive Override -- indicated by four boxes.
Executive override is the highest priority call in the system. If an executive override call preempts a lower priority call, then another executive override call can still preempt the call.
Tips
* When you make or receive an MLPP-enabled call, you will hear special ring tones and call waiting tones that differ from the standard tones.
* If you enter an invalid MLPP access number, a verbal announcement will alert you of the error.
* An MLPP-enabled call retains its priority and preemptive status when you:
- Put the call on hold.
- Transfer the call.
- Add the call to a three-way conference.
- Answer the call using PickUp

You will know you are receiving a priority (precedence) call because you hear a special ring (faster than usual) or a special call waiting tone and an MLPP icon on your phone screen indicates the priority level of the call. To accept the call, answer the call as usual. If necessary, end an active call first.
If you hear a continuous tone interrupting your call, you or the other party are receiving a call that must preempt the current call. Hang up immediately to allow the higher priority call to ring through.

If your administrator enabled Forced Authorization Codes (FAC), you must enter a special key sequence in order to reach the number you dialed. FACs are typically used in situations where limiting access to certain calls is beneficial, such as for long distance or international calls.
The phone plays a special tone to prompt you for this authorization code. Usually, you have your own special code, with a certain level of authorization specified by your administrator. You will only be able to complete calls that fall at or below your current authorization level.
To dial using an FAC:
1. Dial the number normally (see Links for information on dialing).
2. Wait for the phone to play a tone. You have 15 seconds to enter the code.
3. Enter the appropriate FAC. If you misdial, the phone will play another tone, and you must hang up and dial again.
4. Press the # button to send the code, or wait until the 15 seconds elapse, and continue your call.
Note:
* If both CMCs and FACs are enabled for a particular call, you are prompted to enter the FAC followed by the CMC. The tone for each code is the same.
* If you are hearing impaired, remember to wait 1-2 seconds before entering the codes.
* If you forward calls to an FAC- or CMC-controlled number, the call forward attempt fails.

Placing a call on hold, limits the time allowed to resume the call before the Hold Reversion feature reverts the held call back to your phone and alerts you. The time limit is determined by your system administrator.
Your phone alerts you to a reverted held call by producing a single ring (or beep, flash, or other indicator). Your phone also displays an animated Hold Reversion icon next to the caller ID for the held call. If you do not answer the held call, the alert will repeat at intervals determined by your system administrator.
To resume the call on the currently displayed line:
1. Make sure the reverting call is highlighted.
2. Pick up the handset, or press any of the following: the Resume softkey, the speaker button (if unlit), or headset button (if unlit).
To resume the call on a different line, press the appropriate line button. If several reverting calls are holding on that line, your phone resumes the oldest reverting call.
Note: If you use a shared line, Hold Reversion rings only on the phone that put the call on hold, not on the other phones that share the line.

To create a standard (ad-hoc) or Meet-Me conference, use one of the following features:
* Confrn: creates a standard conference by calling each participant individually.
* Join: creates a standard conference among several current calls on a single line.
* Barge: creates a standard conference on a shared line, but not all target phones support this feature.
* cBarge: creates a standard conference on a shared line.
* Meet-Me: creates a conference that allows participants to add themselves by calling an established number at a specific time.
See Links for more information about specific conference types and how to use them.
To work with conferences:
* Use ConfList to list members of a conference.
* From ConfList, the conference initiator can remove members using Remove.
* In addition, the conference initiator can remove the most recently added caller by pressing RmLstC.
* Use Confrn, Join, or DirTrfr to add additional callers to a conference.
Tips:
* Depending on how your phone is configured, if you leave a conference after creating it, the conference might end. Your system administrator determines this setting. To avoid this, you can transfer the conference to another caller before leaving the conference. That caller then acts as the "virtual controller" for the conference. The conference continues with the established participants, but the virtual controller cannot add nor remove parties.
* You can have more than one conference on your phone at a time as long as you do not exceed the maximum number of calls for your line.
* If enabled by your IP phone administrator, you can join together two standard conferences on the same line. Any conference participant can join together two standard conferences by using the Join, DirTrfr, or Transfer softkeys. Use these softkeys the same way you would use them if you were joining two calls together—except that in this case you are joining conference numbers.
* If enabled by your IP phone administrator, any non-controller in a standard conference can add or remove participants.

The pickup feature allows you to redirect a call that is ringing on another phone to your phone. This feature is only available if your administrator configures it for you. An audio and/or visual alert indicates if a call is ringing on the primary line for the phone. This alert notifies the users that a call is ringing in their pickup group.
If you belong to a group (a collection of extensions configured by your system administrator,) you can retrieve calls from a queue by pressing one of the pickup softkeys:
* PickUp: Picks up the longest alerting call in your group.
* GPickUp: Picks up the longest alerting call in the group that you specify by the pickup group number provided to you by your administrator.
* OPickUp: Picks up the longest alerting call in your group or any associated group without requiring a pickup group number.
Notes:
* If your administrator enables auto-pickup, calls you pickup using any of those three methods will automatically connect to your phone.
* If you are not in a pickup group and you use one of these softkeys, you will hear a fast busy tone.
* If you do not have auto-pickup enabled, other phones can pick the call up from you while it is still ringing or while you are performing a transfer with the call.

Use Barge and cBarge to join an active call on a shared line:
* Barge allows you to join an in-progress call with minimal interruption to the call. When you use Barge, other parties on the call might hear a beep tone announcing your presence. Some features are not available when you use Barge. When you hang up, the remaining parties might hear a disconnect tone, and the original call continues. Only certain target phones support the Barge feature.
* cBarge allows you to join an established call and convert it to a standard (ad-hoc) conference. This gives you and all the call participants the same features available in standard conferences and you can add additional participants to the call. When you use cBarge, other parties on the call hear a tone and brief interruption in the call, and call information changes on the screen.

You can use several audio devices with your Cisco IP Communicator:
* Internal sound cards (for use with your computer's internal speaker and microphone, and with any external analog headsets, speakers, or microphones that are supported on your computer)
* USB headsets
* USB handsets
Each sound card and USB device that you want to use with Cisco IP Communicator must be assigned to an audio mode:
* Handset mode
* Headset mode
* Speakerphone mode
The ringer, which alerts you to an incoming call, must have a device assigned to it.
Tips:
* By default, one audio device is assigned to all audio modes. For example, your internal sound card might be the device that is assigned to handset mode, headset mode, and speakerphone mode, as well as the ringer. You can maintain this configuration or customize it.
* If you install a new audio device that requires a new driver and assign it to an audio mode or the ringer, Cisco IP Communicator will prompt you to tune the device before you can use it.
* For more information about customizing audio modes and tuning devices, see the Cisco IP Communicator User Guide or ask your system administrator.

External Devices Guidelines

The following information applies when you use external devices with the Cisco IP Phone:
Although Cisco Systems performs some internal testing of third-party headsets for use with the Cisco IP Phones, Cisco does not certify or support products from headset or handset vendors. Because of the inherent environmental and hardware inconsistencies in the locations where Cisco IP Phones are deployed, there is not a single "best" solution that is optimal for all environments. Cisco recommends that customers test the headsets that work best in their environment before deploying a large number of units in their network.
In some instances, the mechanics or electronics of various headsets can cause remote parties to hear an echo of their own voice when they speak to Cisco IP Phone users.
Cisco Systems recommends the use of good quality external devices, like headsets that are screened against unwanted radio frequency (RF) and audio frequency (AF) signals. Depending on the quality of these devices and their proximity to other devices such as cell phones and two-way radios, some audio noise may still occur.
The primary reason that support of a headset would be inappropriate for an installation is the potential for an audible hum. This hum can either be heard by the remote party or by both the remote party and the Cisco IP Phone user. Some potential humming or buzzing sounds can be caused by a range of outside sources, for example, electric lights, being near electric motors, large PC monitors. In some cases, a hum experienced by a user may be reduced or eliminated by using a local power cube (CP-PWR-CUBE-2).
In these cases, Cisco recommends that you take one or more of the following actions:
* Move the external device away from the source of the RF or AF signals.
* Route the external device cables away from the source of the RF or AF signals.
* Use shielded (screened) cables for the external device, or use cables with a better shield and connector.
* Shorten the length of the external device cable.
* Apply ferrites or other such devices on the cables for the external device.
Beyond the physical, mechanical and technical performance, the audio portion of a headset must sound good to the user and the party on the far end. Sound is subjective and Cisco cannot guarantee the performance of any headsets or handsets, but some of the headsets and handsets on the sites listed below have been reported to perform well on Cisco IP Phones.
Nevertheless, it is ultimately still the customer's responsibility to test this equipment in their own environment to determine suitable performance.
For information about headsets, see:
http://vxicorp.com/cisco
http://plantronics.com
Caution:
In European Union countries, use only external speakers, microphones, and headsets that are fully compliant with the EMC Directive [89/336/EC].

CallManager 1 - 5 displays a prioritized list of the Cisco CallManager servers that are available for processing calls from this phone. This menu also displays the
IP address of an SRST router that is capable of providing limited
Cisco CallManager functionality, if such a router is available.
For an available Cisco CallManager, an option displays the IP address or name of the Cisco CallManager server and one of the following states:
* (Blank) - No current connection to this Cisco CallManager server.
* Active - The Cisco CallManager server from which the phone is currently receiving call-processing services.
* Standby - The Cisco CallManager server to which the phone switches if the current server becomes unavailable.
An option may also display one of more of the following designations or options:
* SRST designation -- Indicates a Survivable Remote Site Telephony router capable of providing Cisco CallManager functionality with a limited feature set. This router assumes control of call processing if all other Cisco CallManager servers become unreachable. The SRST Cisco CallManager always appears last in the list of servers, even if it is active.
* TFTP designation -- Indicates that the phone was unable to register with a Cisco CallManager listed in its configuration file and it registered with the TFTP server instead.
* Authentication icon -- Appears as a shield and indicates that the connection to the Cisco CallManager is authenticated.
* Encrypted icon -- Appears as a lock and indicates that the connection to the Cisco CallManager is authenticated and encrypted.
For more information about authentication and encryption, refer to the Cisco CallManager Security Guide.

TFTP Server 1 indicates the IP address of the primary Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP) server used by the phone. By default this server is CiscoCM1. If you do not use DHCP to direct the phone to a TFTP server, you must manually assign a TFTP server.
TFTP Server 2 indicates the IP address of an optional backup Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP) server that the phone uses if the primary TFTP server is unavailable.
Alternate TFTP indicates whether the phone is using an alternate Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP) server. If you are using DHCP but you want to override the TFTP address that the phone received through DHCP, enable an alternate TFTP server. If this is set to Yes, you must enter a value for TFTP Server 1.
If neither the primary TFTP server nor the backup TFTP server is listed in the CTL file on the phone, you must unlock the CTL file before you can save changes to the TFTP Server 1 option. In this case, the phone will delete the CTL file when you save changes to the TFTP Server 1 option.

Web Access indicates whether web server access to the device is enabled (Yes) or disabled (No). Enabled means the phone's http server is running and the phone can be accessed via a web browser. Disabled means the phone will not respond to web access requests.
To change this setting, use Cisco CallManager.
464
Security Mode indicates whether the device security mode is encrypted, authenticated, or non-secure. To change this setting, use Cisco CallManager.
Notes: During an encrypted call, the phone receives and transmits encrypted audio (your conversation) within the Cisco IP network. Encrypted calls are also authenticated. If the call is routed through non-IP call legs, for example, H.323 or PSTN, the call will be unsecured even though it is encrypted within the IP network and has a lock icon associated with it.
465
CAPF (Certificate Authority Proxy Function) Address shows the IP address and port of the CAPF server that the phone connects to for certificate updates.
466
MIC indicates whether a Manufacturing Installed Certificate is installed on the phone. MICs are installed during the manufacturing process.
467
LSC indicates whether a Locally Significant Certificate (LSC) is installed on the phone.
To update the LSC, unlock the settings by pressing **# and press Update.

The CTL File menu displays the MD5 hash of the Certificate Trust List (CTL) file that is installed on the phone. It also lists the IP addresses of trusted servers by their CTL Role. If the CTL File has a certificate for the server, a certificate icon displays next to the item.
Note:
* The CTL file installs automatically when the phone reboots or resets.
* If no current TFTP server is listed in the CTL file, you must unlock the CTL file before you can save changes to any TFTP Server setting.

Connection Monitor Duration defines the amount of time that, once the phone has failed over to an SRST router, the phone monitors its connection to Cisco CallManager before it unregisters from SRST and re-registers to Cisco CallManager.
The default value is 120 seconds. To disable the connection monitor, set the value to 0.
To change this setting, use Cisco CallManager.

VidMode allows you to select the video display mode in which to view a video conference, toggling among the video bridge supported modes. The supported modes depend on how your administrator configured the phone system.
Possible modes include:
* Voice Activated mode -- You see the conference participants on a video call only if they are speaking.
* Continuous Presence mode -- All conference members are shown, regardless of who is speaking.
Notes:
* This setting is available only on 'ad hoc' conferences, not Meet-Me conferences.
* This softkey is available on all video calls, but is only active for video conferences.

Other PickUp (OPickUp) is similar to Group PickUp (GPickUp), except that it will pick up calls to not only your group, but to other associated groups that your administrator has configured, without needing to enter the group number. The phone will follow the sequence the administrator configured to check each pickup group, and will pickup the longest alerting call in any group in which it finds calls.
To pickup a call using OPickUp:
1. When you hear the call ring on another phone in your group or an associated group, press OPickUp. If you want to pickup the call on a line other than your primary line, go offhook on that line first, then press OPickUp.
2. If your phone is not configured to auto-pickup, you can view the caller information and press Answer when you are ready to take the call. If you have auto-pickup enabled, the call is transferred automatically.
Note: Your administrator configures your pickup groups, and enables auto-pickup.

The PC VLAN parameter enables phones to strip the 802.1p/q tags from packets as they exit the phone PC port. This parameter is useful for systems that use voice VLANs with non-Cisco switches and is available only when the Admin VLAN is active.
To set the parameter:
1. Press Settings > Network Configuration > PC VLAN. (PC VLAN is number 58 in the list. To jump there quickly from the top of the Network Configurations Menu, press 58.)
2. Set it as follows:
* blank to disable
* 1 through 4094 to strip tags from all VLANs.
Note: In future releases, the value of 1-4094 might indicate which VLAN from which to strip headers. For example, if PC VLAN = 123, then tags only from VLAN 123 are stripped. Check the release notes of each release for more information.
